Dusty Old Trainers
Mandy picked up the trainers from the back of the cupboard. She wiped away at a tiny section, hidden
under the thick dusty silvery coating, their original colour was revealed.
A keen runner back then, until the day she was raped. She
couldn’t wear them after that, too many reminders, and yet she couldn’t bear to
throw them away. Studied hard instead, carving a career as a criminal lawyer.
She placed them in the removals box.
‘Mum, why are you taking
these?’ Poppy curled her lip in disgust.
‘To remind me of just how far I have come.’ Mandy smiled.
Hope you enjoyed this

Dear Bettina,
ReplyDeleteGood for her. A good way to give back and prevent what happened to her from happening to another woman. Good story.
Shalom,
Rochelle
A shock I wasn't expecting in the middle and by the end I was admiring her courage to keep going. Well done.
ReplyDeleteWonderful story of resilience and determination . Loved it , Bettina.
ReplyDeleteHolding on to them clearly helped her to overcone adversity. I'm wondering if Poppy is connected to her misfortune.

We all need those reminders of how far we've come. Her Yale's particularly sad, though.
ReplyDeleteOh damn, that's rough.
ReplyDeleteThat reveal was brutal. Good on her to have overcome that and achieved so much in her life. I might be reading too far into the story, but is the kid a result of that horrific incident? Makes me wonder!
ReplyDeleteOh good for her!
ReplyDeleteMandy has channelized her suffering into a fulfilling profession. from an athlete to a criminal lawyer she has walked a long distance. Hats off to this courageous person.

Not ruminating over the sorrow, but building for her future. You go, girl!
