Signs
Beth was crying hysterically when the rescuers found her. Lying beside Robert’s lifeless body, her legs were fixed to the
ground bloodied, pitted with debris.
‘Didn’t you kids see the signs?’
Beth nodded, her crying slowing before she managed a
whimpered, almost silent, 'yes.’
‘So, what, you ignore them do you?’
Flashbacks of the step that sent Robert tumbling off the cliff edge sent Beth wailing once more. A kindly rescuer glared at the man who had dared to interrogate the distraught teenager.

Ah! Totally! I thought it meant keep your hands off the pipe.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't the best sign, especially if that's the consequence of going past it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a sign you find in industry warning people to keep out of an area. But how many people know that? Not a high proportion, I suspect.
ReplyDeleteI like your twist, Bettina
Cute...and, unfortunately, I taught some who, probably, would have ignored it, too, for the same reason.

Oh... so easy not to understand the meaning... a sad story.

Dear Bettina,
ReplyDeletePoor Beth. A wrong decision will probably plague her for the rest of her life. Nicely done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Ah, poor girl. A memory she will carry with her all her life. Not knowing what the sign meant was a really good twist. I didn't think it was crystal clear, myself.
ReplyDeleteAwwwe to be fair to her, the sign was confusing.
ReplyDeleteAw, that was sad but a great story.
ReplyDeleteSo sad. The sign can have so many interpretations. Well done!
